In 2003, ten gay men were brutally attacked at Sizzlers, a massage parlour in Sea Point. In SIZZLERS- The hate crime that tore Sea Point apart (2024) Cape-Town based true crime writer Nicole Engelbrecht tells the story of a massacre of savage violence in which nine of the men lost their lives. Quinton Taylor, the badly wounded sole survivor, managed to identify Adam Woest and Trevor Theys as the two suspects. Engelbrecht, host of South Africa’s most popular true crime podcast True Crime South Africa is also the co-author of Killer Stories, which intertwines South Africa’s most terrifying serial killers’ versions of the truth and the true-crime stories behind them, re-telling their killing sprees in gripping detail. Psychologist Brin Hodgskiss interviewed several of the most notorious serial killers in the bowels of the country’s most secure prisons. His recordings sat gathering dust until Engelbrecht found his research online and the pair joined forces to combine Hodgskiss’ interviews with the tenets of narrative psychology to place the reader inside the minds of the killers.
